Kanaya Tea Festival 2014

The Kanaya Tea Festival is the more important for being held only every two years!
It is held on the second week end of April for two days, meaning that the ladies and girls of the whole town parade no less than 4 times during that time!

I arrived at Kanaya Station on Sunday and although the parade is held a bit away from it you knew what was going on!

SN3O0082

The welcoming committee!

SN3O0129

Our bunch of 7 visitors, including 6 expats, was duly invited to pose with the welcoming party for the official photo album!

SN3O0080

All ladies from the town participated to the whole festival!

SN3O0083

As for the little ones, they did need some help!

SN3O0079

A small dance party of cha musume was on show in front of the Station all day!

SN3O0078

No less than three generations!

SN3O0130

Participants, especially adults, were busy with preparations of the floats for the evening. Unfortunately Shizuoka City is quite a long way and I couldn’t stay at night… Probably for the best as I would have had to stay overnight with all that drinking going on! LOL

SN3O0131

Busy, busy, busy!

SN3O0132

Fixing the lanterns to light up the night!

SN3O0208

Last practice!

SN3O0207

Well, these hadn’t waited to practice drinking!

SN3O0157

And those veterans definitely enjoyed the respite!

SN3O0133

All under the watchful eyes of the organizers?

SN3O0134

Cha Musume Pageant!

SN3O0136

Alright, ladies! Get ready!

SN3O0137

Let me help with those knots!

SN3O0147

So cute!

SN3O0149

Not the way the dancers were carrying their belongings!

SN3O0153

Over 1,000 dancers all set!

SN3O0166

during that time onlookers were busy feeding themselves! Takoyaki!

SN3O0165

Okonomiyaki!

SN3O0163

Tea leaves massage!!

SN3O0162

Professional demonstration!

SN3O0141

Dance step 1?

SN3O0142

Dance step 2?

SN3O0143

Dance step 3?

SN3O0144

One little cha musume forgot to turn around!

SN3O0145

Dance step 4?

SN3O0146

Dance step 6?

SN3O0160

Never too young to start!

SN3O0158

In two years time these little girls will be veterans!

SN3O0139

My favorite dancer of the day!

SN3O0200

And I left to the sound of two strong lady drummers!

In two years time I’ll make sure to stay there all nigh!

Tea Festival Mural in Kanaya, Shizuoka Prefecture!

SN3O0329

Yesterday during my visit to Kanaya, Shimada City, to collect as much information on the coming tea festival I belatedly noticed this big mural on the left hand side of the Kanaya JR Station exit! Actually many of my Japanese friends hadn’t heard of it!

SN3O0323

Mind you, it does look quite recent!
Let’s have a look at it!

SN3O0324

In fact the mural depicts scenes of the tea festival only!
Dancing “Tea Girls”

SN3O0325

Dancing Tea Girls and men beating smaller type Jpanaese drums!
The taiko/太鼓/drumming is also an imprtant part of the Festival!

SN3O0326

Men striking small and big drums!

SN3O0327

The whole mural is actually a double reflection of the scene!

SN3O0328

Looking forward to watching the real dancing Tea Girls on April 12th~13th!
