S-Pulse was not dominated but they gave away two soft goals and made too many mistakes especially kaneko and Tasuta on the right side. We seem to be back to the old S-Pulse after some good results. Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 56: Sagara Cho! Old and new!

Sagara Cho is located in the south part of Makinohara City.
This is a bit confusing for newcomers as only recently Haibara Gun has been renamed Makinohara City while two districts, namely Yoshida Cho (Town) and Sagara Cho (Town) have still kept their names and some autonomy as Makinohara City has a Town Hall in both districts!

Talking of Sagara Town Hall, the staff and civil servants there not only are super friendly bu also proud of their culture and history! It is not big but even though they can provide you with pamphlets in three foreign languages!

Actually if you visit the Tourism Bureau inside the Town Hall the staff there will donate you a metal badge of their newest manhole cover if you can show them a photo of it!

There is actually only one sample of this new manhole cover i town. It is located along the main shopping street right from the bus stop, Sagara Eigyoujyou, the last stop of the Shizutetsu Highway Bus leaving from Shizuoka Cenova Store or Shizuoka Station (about two every hour, 80 minute-trip! Count 1,250 yen)!

You can’t miss it!

It commemorates the 300th Anniversary of the Death of Tanuma Okitsugu, the last Daimyo of the Sagara Domain.
Check his life and achievements on Wikipedia!

At the same time and in the same street you can discover real antiques!
This fire hydrant was installed in 1991!
I heard it is kept for the sake of culture but it is actually functioning!

Since it would not be easy to find for fire trucks especially at night the City had the word “水?Water” painted on the road!

An older common type fire hydrant cover but with the sigil of Sagara Cho!

Another one found everywhere with only “水/Water” sigil!

A large sewer manhole cover with the Shizuoka Prefecture map sigil!

A small valve cover with the Sagara Cho sigil!

Another one with the same sigil!

Time to say good by and take the bus back to Shizuoka City!

HIGHOCTANE/HAIOKU by Nick Itoh in Shizuoka City

Hamamatsu Castle Ruins

There are still a few castles remaining in Shizuoka Prefecture although all of them are ruins or rebuilt or both.
Bear in mind that the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu spent a long time at different periods of his life in the Prefecture (actually 4 of them at the time) leaving his mark here and there.
One of them is the Hamamatsu Castle whose ruins can still be visited in Hamamatsu City!
Just go to Hamamatsu Castle Park/Hamamatujyo Kouen/浜松城公園 (refer to the details at the end of this article) at any time of theyear to enjoy the sights although my preference is late Autumn when the leaves change color!

A pleasurable stroll!

Most information is bilingual including the very useful map at the entrance of the castle domains!

You do have to negotiate a few slopes!

Enormous camellia tree!

Getting near the entrance!

Bilingual sign introducing the Honmaru/main building! Make a point to read all those signs! They are not only great study but very well translated!

A statue of the younger Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Actually the castle was built by the Imagawa Clan before they lost power and became the masters of ceremony of the Tokugawa Clan.

The entrance to the main building from down below!

A great spot for photography buffs!

A side view of the castle!

The last climb and the torii gate of the Shinto Shrine looking after the place!

Great explanations of the building of the walls!

Succinct but very precise historical introduction!

This was a castle conceived for defense during the Japan Feudal Era!

A must read explanation of the castle foundations, citing that the castle was rebuilt in 1958 but on a smaller scale!

The back entrance?

Great explanation on the well that any castle needed to provide water safely to its occupants!

I would have liked to be an enemy tying to climb that wall!

Even if one had succeeded climbing the wall he didn’t stand much a chance passing through the entrance!

This is only a very short introduction to local history! There is plenty more to discover and there is also a park around the castle to spend the day!

Shimada City Roses Hill Park/島田市ばらの丘公園!

if you like roses the place to in Shizuoka Prefecture is the Shimada City Roses Hill Park as it is open all year!

The access is quite easy, 10 minutes by car or by bus from Shimada JR Station!

Entrance fees are reasonable and discounts are offered to kids and groups!

It is certainly larger than expected but very comfortable ro stroll through!

All amenities are provided, especially clean washrooms!

By fine weather it is the ideal place to relax by yourself, friends or family!

As I said it is bigger than expected and even if it rains you can always concentrate on the very wide greenhouse!

Even kids will enjoy it!

Let’s walk around! Hedges everywhere!

The best times of the year are during the Spring and Autumn Festivals, but specialists will find something to observe and study all year round!

Varieties come from all over the World and Japan, including these Charleston roses inviting you to a dance!

Slopes everywhere!

Inside the greenhouse! The staff and gardeners will kindly answer your questions!

Take your time! In any case there is also a cafeteria and souvenir shop!

These will make you blush! LOL

Elegant and cute!

My favorite!

Where were the kids by the way?

Great pictures to take, even under the rain!

Will certainly come back again!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 55: Makinohara City!

Beautiful fire hydrant manhole cover but does not bear any distinctive sigil!

Makinohara City in the southern center part of Shizuoka Prefecture, in spite of its full city status acquired on October 11th, is what you may call a manhole cover desert. The city was created by merging the northern and western part of Haibara Gun/Distric (the southeastern part becoming Yoshida Cho/Town) and Sagara Village. Its main resources are green tea, some fishing and a Suzuki car components factory.
I suppose that in some near future that the City will come up with its own distinctive manhole cover!

This large fire hydrant cover is the only truly Makinohara City cover! It is a common design but with the name of the city on it!

This is a cover found everywhere with the central sigil with the Japanese caharacter for “water”!

水/water!

The same with the old Haibara District sigil!

は/hiragana for “ha” of Haibara District!

A well preserved cover but with the old Haibara District sigil!

An even older Haibara District cover!

Similar one but reinforced by an outer rim!

A small valve cover from my old files!

Looking forward to the new Makinohara City manhole cover!
