“Kids” at Kanaya Tea Festival!

Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of April saw the 36th biannual Tea Festival enacted in Kanaya Town, Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture!
It gave me another ample opportunity to take some interesting pictures of Japanese “characters” one doesn’t have many occasions to catch!

Utogi Kagura Spring Festival in Utogi, Shizuoka City, with the Wasabi & Tea Farmers!

On the first Saturday of April and second Saturday of October are held the Spring and October Utogi KaguraFestivals/有東木神楽祭 at Shirahige Shrine/白髭神社 in Utogi, Aoi Ku, Shizuoka City/静岡市葵区有東木 by the local wasabi and tea farmers!
Yesterday as I happened to help a French reporter in her interviewing local wasabi farmers whose abode stands just beside the Shinto Shrine, I had the chance to say “hello” to the participants in their company!

The stairs to the shrine up to a steep slope. We already are at about 600 meters altitude!

That shrine had been erected no less than 500 years ago when only green tea was cultivated in this area, up in the maountains on the right bank of the Abe River!
And the oldest cedar tree rising in front was already found in local records 720 year ago. Its height is presently 35 meters, its circumference 6.80 meter and its branches spread as far as 15 meters!

The torii/鳥居/sacred birds gate found at the entrance of all Shinto Shrines in Japan!

The cedar trees’ invasion of the stair stones is a sure indication of the shrine’ age!

I managed to sandwich the visit on both sides of the interview which allowed me to the preparations of the dance!

Fires had been lit for seabreams to grill. Seabreams are a symbol of prosperity even up in a Japanese mountain!

Naturally I was offered a taste of these succulent seabreams (and plenty of hot sake!)!

Sushi: Uogashi Stand at Parche Supermarket (Part 1)!

If you go to the Supermarket in Parche inside Shizuoka JR Station, that is, through the middle corridor leading you between the track entrances you will eventually reach a large stand just beyond the the wasabi and the green tea stand held bu Uogashi.
Uogashi is a famous sushi company from Numazu City with sushi restaurants in Shizuoka City and even in Yokohama!
They incidentally also have a restaurant in the Acty section of Shizuoka Station.
This is an introductory report as I succeeded in convincing their manager to interview them at work!

Suhi nigiri individually wrapped and sold separately with or without wasabi. I haven’t counted yet, but there must be over 3 dozen different varieties!
Just have a good look and compose you lunch/dinner/snack!

Ssuhi assortments and sushi bento at very reasonable prices!
The reason for they freshness and reasonable prices is that Uogashi gets most its fish directly from Fishermen in the Prefecture and elsewheer!

The seaweeed is being kept dry in a special wrapping until you open it yourself!

More extremely reasonable sushi sets!
They might be cheap, but you will not find the same quality for that price in Tokyo!
Great for travelers to buy before boarding a train or going to their hotels!

Steam Locomotive at Ieyama Station, Oigawa Railway Line in a Driving Storm!

Today saw an incredibly strong storm with driving rain pelting everything until early afternoon in Shizuoka Prefecture but it certainly discourage many a steam locomotive fan to go to Ieyama Station in Shizmada City!

It was certainly cats, dogs, halberds and what else when we arrived at the antique station of Ieayama!

I’m sure that a train buff would like to go home with this wooden sign with name of Ieayama Station in Japanese!

The station might be really ancient (the washrooms are modern!) but you will find a cute little shop inside!

The station staff had to scream off some buffs off the tracks when the Steam Locomotive finally arrived!

People crowded the small gate to take a picture inside the driving rain!

That is when I realized there was a better way to take a picture of the train!
I just went outside and walked around the small station in spite of the rain which contributed to a totally deserted area for my great pleasure!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 33: Kambara, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City!

Kanbara, located between Yui and Shin kambara in Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, was merged into Shizuoka City on March 1st, 2006, but Shimizu City became part of Shizuoka City as Shimizu Ku on April 1st, 2004.
On the other hand Yui merged with Shimizu Ku into Shizuoka City only on November 1st, 2008 with some confusing results when it comes to manhole covers!
Soon or later, especially after I have covered Shin Kanbara, I will have to to publish a compilation of only the truly decorated manhole covers in the whole of Shizuoka City, and that is mor than 2 dozens of them!

This is the most representative fire hydrant manhole cover of Kanabara. Even though, the crest is that of Yui, but the mark/first kanji/蒲 of Kanbara is included!

It is often found together with a water valve pit!

This pattern exists elsewhere but it is inscribed with “Kanbara Town”!

This beautiful fire hydrant cover is actually a Shizuoka City item, therefore quite recent!

This cover reflects the confusion. It is a soccer fire hydrant manhole cover from Shimizu City before it was merged into Shizuoka City, which could have been set either before or after the merger!

This water valve pit being very recent it tends to prove that the Shimizu City covers were later used in Shimizu Ku which includes Kanbara Town as it was called before the merger!

If you have the chance to stop at Yui, Shimizu Ku, Shizuoka City, try and go to visit the Hiroshige Wood Block Prints Art Museum!
You are about to discover an unexpected sight or two there!

Of course the whole complex is a source for great photography but you should have a second look at the narrow and shallow “moat” along the wall!

They are looked after by the staff of the Museum who feed them and clean the moat regularly all year round!

Manhole Covers in Shizuoka Prefecture 32: Kanaya, Shimada City!

Decorated manhole covers all seem to be those of fire hydrants in Kanaya Cho in Shimada City, although there is a big oddity!

Big red fire truck. This design can be found in many cites in side and outside Shizuoka Prefecture although the “city crest” will be different!

This must a fairly recent cover as the crest is that of Shimada City to which Kanaya was recently merged!

Interestingly enough this one was donated by the City of Ise in Mie Prefecture!

Vegan Japanese Cakes: Wagashi at Friand Kadoya in Shizuoka City!

Wagashi/和菓子, or “Japanese Cakes” are a boon for people who don’t eat eggs or dairy products.
No wonder they are witnessing a boom all over the world!
And true tradtional wagashi are not only healthy and tasty but also so artistic!

now, in Shizuoka City there a splendid and very traditional cake shop called Friand Kadoya which makes both European-style and wagashi cakes!
It is a famous establishment place and their wagashi can be enjoyed at Issa Kissa in Shizuoka JR Station!
Actually the shop stand less than 10 minutes on foot from the Shizuoka JR Station South Exit!

“Friand/ふりあん” can be loosely translated as “gourmet’s pleasure”, although the French will useful it in the expression, “Je suis friand de…/I love…”. The word “friandise/sweets” is the noun for the adjective “friand”!

Mr. Eiji Asaba/浅場栄一さん is the 3rd geneartion owner/chef at Friand Kadoya.
After graduating from High School he spent 2 years learning his craft in a wagashi cake school in Tokyo for 2 years and worked for 2 and a half more years in Tokyo before working under his father’s supervision for 13 years. he has been the owner and chef for the last 7 years following the father’s departure from this world.

The wagashi cakes are separately displayed.
They are exclusively made with komeko/rice flour grown and produced in Japan. Sometimes he does have to use a little wheat flour.
All coloring used in his cakes are either of natural vegetable and fruit origins or coloring only registered and allowed by the Japanese Government.

March being a very busy season I had to content myself with a short chat with Mr. Asaba, a very affable man, and taking enough photographs to give you an indication of the true delicacies and works of art in wait for you!

Tea Festival Mural in Kanaya, Shizuoka Prefecture!

Yesterday during my visit to Kanaya, Shimada City, to collect as much information on the coming tea festival I belatedly noticed this big mural on the left hand side of the Kanaya JR Station exit! Actually many of my Japanese friends hadn’t heard of it!

Mind you, it does look quite recent!
Let’s have a look at it!

In fact the mural depicts scenes of the tea festival only!
Dancing “Tea Girls”

Dancing Tea Girls and men beating smaller type Jpanaese drums!
The taiko/太鼓/drumming is also an imprtant part of the Festival!

The whole mural is actually a double reflection of the scene!

Suspended Bridge in Arai Machi, Shizuoka Prefecture!

The area north of Arai Machi, in spite of its professional outboard boat races and rowing practice waterfronts is a pretty drab place except maybe for one sole eye-catching site!

It is a suspended bridge of enormous proportions, that is, for a small agglomeration that does not deserve the name of “shi/市”/city!
But you can already see it through the windows of the almost derelict JR Arai Station!

As I had plenty of time on hand that I decided to walk to it for close and precise observation!

I first to walk quite a circuitous way around the giant parking reserved for the boat race punters!

I finally made it to the main road called Shiomi Bypass which had to be built in 1996, not so much for the boat races, but because people had to cross the large stretch of Hamana Lake which would force people to drive around for more than 50 km!

What you see on the left is a sheltered access to the car park!

The lane on the left leads to a small marina for pleasure boats and rowing!

I don’t know how tall it is, but it must be at least 50 meters!

The cables are actually long metal tubes.
The whole edifice seems quite light. Considering the eventuality of high winds, typhoons and even earthquakes, it gives an impression of “bending but not breaking”!

It does make for some inventive photography with the few trees nearby!
